Social Media Can Harm Your Divorce Case
It is important to be careful using social media during a divorce.
Many of us use social media to keep in touch with loved ones, reconnect with old friends and as a recreational outlet. However, information posted on your favorite social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and online dating websites, can harm you in your support, custody, divorce and equitable distribution matters.
If you do not have a social media account, it is not in your best interest to establish one upon separation from your spouse or during your custody dispute. If you have a social media account, you must remember that anything posted on the internet can and will be used against you as evidence in your family law matter.
Photos and messages shared on these sites can be easily taken out of context to be used against you. Therefore, we often remind clients to be cognizant of the privacy settings for social media accounts and to consider who has access to the information being shared. It is also important to make sure to use passwords that cannot be easily decoded.
